Flores Island
Flores Island, part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia, has a rich and diverse history, influenced by various cultures, religions, and colonization.
1. Origin of the Name
The name “Flores” comes from Portuguese, meaning “flowers”. Originally, this name was given by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century to an island on the eastern part of Flores called “Cabo de Flores” or “Cape of Flowers”. Over time, this name was applied to the entire island.
2. Pre-Colonial Period
Before the arrival of Europeans, Flores Island was already inhabited by various ethnic groups with unique cultures and languages. One of the main ethnic groups in Flores is the Manggarai people, who live in the western part of the island. The island also has many communities living under strong traditional customary systems, with megalithic traditions and distinctive traditional houses.
3. Arrival of the Portuguese

After the period of Portuguese dominance, Flores fell under Dutch control in the 19th century. The Dutch introduced a colonial administrative system and imposed control over the region. However, Dutch influence in Flores was not as strong as in other areas of Indonesia due to Flores’s remote geography and the diversity of local tribes.
5. Period of Independence
After World War II, Flores became part of the independent Republic of Indonesia in 1945. During this period, Flores began experiencing significant social and economic changes, including improvements in infrastructure and education.
6. Culture and Religion
Catholicism plays an important role in the life of the Flores community, thanks to the Portuguese mission. To this day, the majority of Flores’s population is Catholic, with some communities still maintaining their traditional beliefs.
7. Discovery of Homo floresiensis
In 2003, the discovery of “Homo floresiensis” fossils at Liang Bua, a cave in Flores, attracted worldwide attention. Homo floresiensis, often called the “hobbit human” due to its small body size, lived in Flores around 100,000 to 60,000 years ago. This discovery provided new insights into the history of human evolution.
